What Should You Do if You Are In an Accident? Find Out With This Guide from Russ Darrow Collision Center

Car accidents are stressful enough without having to figure out what you need to do afterward. While we hope you are never in an accident, we want to help you be prepared. That's why Russ Darrow Collision Center is glad to offer this list. Once you take a look through this guide, it's easier for you to be prepared. If you do happen to be in a collision, we invite you to come to Russ Darrow Collision Center. We have locations in Milwaukee, Appleton, Madison, and Waukesha.

1. Check for Injuries

If you are in an accident, the first thing you should do is make sure that you and your passengers are not injured. If there are any injuries, call for medical assistance right away.

2. Move to Safety and Contact the Police

If the vehicles in the collision can be driven, it's best to move the accident from traffic. Then, you can set up emergency triangles or road flares to warn other drivers of the accident. However, it's important to move away from the road as soon as you can. Once your vehicles have been moved to safety, contact the police. When you get through, they will either dispatch an officer to the scene or let you know that you can file a report at a later time.

3. Document the Accident

The next step is to document the accident. It's especially important to do this if the police are not sending an officer; however, even if they are, you can document the scene while you wait. You should take pictures of your vehicle and the other vehicles from several angles, paying special attention to visible damage. You should write down as much information as you can, including details about the other vehicles, the location of the accident, the date and time, and more. You should also get the full names, contact information, insurance information, vehicle registration numbers, driver's license numbers, and license plate numbers of any other drivers involved. However, you should limit any conversation you have with the other drivers to just these things. Do not apologize or make small talk.

4. Consider Filing an Insurance Claim

If the damage to your vehicle is serious enough that repairs will cost more than the insurance deductible, you should file a claim with your insurance company. However, it may be a good idea to skip this step if the damage is minor.

5. Find an Authorized Collision Center

Once you have filed a claim or decided to handle things on your own, find a certified service center like Russ Darrow Collision Center!
