Five Car Noises That Should Not Be Ignored
A sudden change in the noise of your car, or unusual noises, could signal a new (or old) problem that needs to be repaired! Often after a collision, cars can produce new noises as a result of new damage from the accident.
Here are 5 of the most common noises and what they can signal:
1. Squealing or growling brakes:
These sounds typically mean that your brake pads are deteriorating/wearing and can even mean that the metal of the brake pads are rubbing together.
2. Clunking or tapping from the hood:
These sounds can often occur if you get in a front-end collision. This can signify a problem within the engine and problems with the pistons, rods, and
valves.
3. Rattling (like a coin) within your wheel:
This rattling typically occurs when driving your vehicle, and can disappear when your vehicle is stopped. This typically occurs as a result of a loose nut
within a hubcap and, usually, your tires need to be tightened again.
4. Clicking while making turns:
A clicking sound can be a result of many different problems. One of the causes of a clicking sound is a damaged CV (constant velocity) joint. A damaged CV joint can make a clicking sound while turning or accelerating quickly.
5. Clunking from the wheel area:
A clunking sound usually means damage to the shock absorbers, struts, and bearings. This is a common occurrence after your vehicle hits a large bump, hole, etc. A slight clunking can spiral into the suspension and/or wheel breaking.
Many of these sounds can signify underlying damage, or can result in further deterioration, and should be treated as soon as possible, if not immediately.
