How To Handle Deer Collisions
Deer season! November and December are popular months for deers to be out and crossing roads. In Wisconsin there are over 20,000 car accidents each year caused by Deer. It is important to look out for deer crossing signs while driving and to remember that deers typically travel in packs so if you see a deer, it is likely they aren’t on their own.
Typically if a deer sees headlights its first reaction would be to stay still because it’ll think you are a predator. Their next reaction is usually to run in a random direction which puts the driver at a greater risk of swerving and hitting the deer or another object, like a tree off the road. Try to avoid swerving and slow down as much as possible as you are coming up on the deer if you happen to see it. The slower you are going during impact, the less damage it will do to the deer and your vehicle.
If you end up hitting the deer, it’s best that you put your hazards on and move to the side of the road if possible. If you can’t, it’s important to stay away from the injured deer as they are unpredictable, so get out of your car and walk away from it. You also don’t want to stay in your vehicle in case there is oncoming traffic. Call emergency services right away and make sure to take pictures of the damage to your vehicle. Even if there is minor damage on the outside, there could be damage to the inside of the vehicle so it is important to check for any hidden damages.
